Historical Background

Duta Wacana Theological College was founded in 1962 as the result of the amalgamation of two theological schools in Yogyakarta and Malang which had served as centres of ministerial training for decades. When Duta Wacana became a University in 1985, the college was made a faculty and named ‘the Faculty of Theology Duta Wacana Christian University.’ Today, the Faculty of Theology remains an important part of the University and continues to play a role as a reputable institution of theological education in Indonesia. Duta Wacana Christian University is now supported by 12 Indonesian Protestant synods and cooperates with many other churches of various denominations. 

Vision and Mission

The vision of the Faculty is ‘to become an ecumenical, gospel-inspired and contextual institution of theological education which prepares theologians with integrity in responding to the needs and challenges of pluralistic churches and society.’  

Based on that vision, the Faculty of Theology recognises its mission as:

  1. Administering contextual theological education at undergraduate and graduate levels
  2. Conducting thorough studies and research on biblical texts and contexts of history as well as actual life of the church and society 
  3. Dedicating findings of contextual theological studies and researches in service of the empowerment and development of church and society

to contribute the findings of contextual theological studies and researches to the service of empowering and developing the church and society.

Degree Program

The faculty offers academic and professional programs leading to the following degrees:

Sarjana Sains Teologi (equivalent to Bachelor of Divinity):

An undergraduate program in theology requiring the completion of 144 credits including a one semester internship and a final research paper

Master of Divinity:

A combination of basic courses in theology, professional training for church ministry, as well as academic courses and research in contextual theology. The M.Div program is designed for those with a bachelor degree in any discipline who intend to work as church ministers. The program can be completed in a 3 year period of full-time study.

Master of Theology:

A postgraduate program in contextual theology, requiring a completion of 12 courses and a research thesis worth 9 credits. The M.Th program covers various areas of theological study, including biblical studies, constructive theology, Christian education, pastoral theology, social ethics, church development, history of Christianity, missiology and theology of religions.  The degree of Master of Theology can be obtained in 2 years. The admission requirements include the completion of a basic theological education at BD or MDiv level. 

Master of Theological Ministry

A professional program designed specifically to enhance ministerial skills and professionalism. A significant portion of the program must be carried out in the church where the student hold a ministerial or leadership position. The admission requirements include a minimum of 3 years experience as a pastor or church leader.

Doctor of Theology

An advanced postgraduate research program in theology above the level of Master of Theology designed for church intellectuals and lecturers in theological institutions who have graduated with an M.Th (or another Master’s degree with a significant research component). D.Th. student body includes ATESEA Theological Union (ATU)-affiliated students as well as regular ones.     

Doctor of Ministry

An advanced professional program, focusing on a major research project based in a particular congregation or church-related institution. D. Min. candidature requirements include participation with outstanding performance in Master of Theological Ministry courses. D.Min students must have at least 5 years of experience in church ministry and leadership.

Doctor of Philosophy in Interreligious Studies

An international, interreligious, and interdisciplinary program in the study of religions. The program is specifically handled by Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies in Yogyakarta (ICRS Yogya), a consortium of three universities: Duta Wacana Christian University (UKDW), Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (UIN SK) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM). Seminary Programs

In addition to the degree programs, the Faculty, through its Seminary Division, conducts a variety of programs and activities in the areas of spirituality, arts and continuing education. The Seminary Division brings together the Centre for Spiritual Formation, the Centre for Religious Arts, as well as the Student Dormitory and Guest House, located in Seturan Campus. Programs offered as continuing education include short courses in applied theology, workshops in ministry as well as intercultural and interreligious exposures. 

 

Departement of Research, Literature and Publication

 

The Department of Research, Literature and Publication is a unit of the Faculty which organises research seminars, conferences and the publication of research findings. The Department also arranges the publication of the Faculty’s journals, Gema Teologi and Wacana Teologi.

Centres of Research and Community Services

The Faculty establishes units for research and community service projects concerning specific issues. Apart from those clustered within the Seminary Division, these units are the Centre for the Study of Religions and the Centre for the Study of Feminist Theology. The Faculty also benefits from the support of the University’s interdisciplinary units. These include the Centre for the Study and Promotion of Peace, the Centre for Personality Development, the Institute for Research and Community Service and the Centre for Business Ethics and Professionalism.

 

Campus Facilities

The Faculty of Theology has 2 campuses: the main university campus in Jalan Wahidin 5-21 at Yogyakarta city centre, and the Seturan campus in northeast Yogyakarta. Facilities provided in the main campus include administration and staff offices, library, class rooms, seminar rooms, video conference room, multi media studio, computer clusters, chapels, bookshop, bank offices and ATMs, as well as a food court. The internet is accessible through a WiFi connection which is available 24 hours on the whole campus. All offices, class rooms and seminar rooms are also equipped with multi media and internet facilities.

 

Accreditation and Recognition

The Faculty is legally recognised by the Indonesian government c.q. General Directorate of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture. The academic programs are accredited by Association of Theological Education in South East Asia (ATESEA) and the National Board of Accreditation – Higher Education (BAN-PT).

 

Partnership

For the purpose of strengthening and sharing resources, collaborations and partnerships have been established with other academic institutions in local, regional and global levels. The Faculty’s partner institutions include Protestant Theological University, Radboud University Nijmegen, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Sabah Theological Seminary, Faculty of Theology Sanata Dharma University, Jakarta Theological Seminary, State Islamic University Sunan Kalidjaga, Postgraduate School of Gadjah Mada University, Faculty of Theology Indonesian Christian University Maluku, and Faculty of Theology University of Halmahera. The Faculty is also an active member of the national association of theological schools (PERSETIA) and recognised as a centre of theological excellence of the Association of Theological Education in South East Asia (ATESEA).

Journal of Theology

Faculty of Theology publishes 2 academic journals, namely 'Gema Teologi' and 'Wacana Teologi'. Wacana Teologi contains articles written by students in all levels of the Faculty, whilst articles in Gema Teologi come from a boarder theological and religious studies community, including lecturers, researchers, religious leaders, and postgraduate students.
