Background

In the 1980s, the development of Indonesian society which tended to refer as an agrarian society started to change into an industrial society and move towards the information society. In 1985, Dr. Judowibowo Poerwowidagdo, the first Rector of the Duta Wacana Christian University (UKDW) perceived and learned about the changes caused by the development of science and technology, especially information technology. These changes will obviously change the community’s mindset and lifestyle due to the changes in communication technology that connects throughout the world via a network which is now called internet. This is what is now called the era of globalization, an era in which one country can easily influence each others in forms of ideas, order of life, order of statehood, and so on that is able to change a lot of established orders at different levels of both society and country.

Based on these observations and to respond to the need for reliable human resources in this country, the university founders felt the need to open a new study program namely Informatics Engineering in 1986, where the graduates were expected to fulfill and respond to those needs. At that time, this program was placed under the auspices of the Faculty of Engineering that was founded in 1985 along with the establishment of UKDW. At that time, there was only one university that provided a computer education; although there was such an education but it was still at the Academy level (D-3), while that in Bachelor Degree (S-1) has not yet existed in Yogyakarta. Therefore, the Informatics Engineering Department of UKDW was the first in Yogyakarta, even perhaps in Central Java.

By opening the Informatics Engineering department, it was then necessary to complete the academic facilities including buildings and other supporting ones. Dr. Judowibowo Poerwowidagdo together with the board of trustees then sought for fund assistance from both domestic and foreign sources. From foreign organization, UKDW received financial assistance from the EZE (West Germany), a development agency founded by Protestant churches where the funds came from the West Germany government. From domestic sources, it was Mr. Drs. Radius Prawiro who supported and helped to get fund from many businessmen and a wider community, especially the church members, which was later called the Duta Wacana companion. They provided financial assistance and prayed for the survival and development of UKDW as a college to learn a variety of science for the Indonesian generations from different religious, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.

An idea called ‘the New Breed of Professional’ has become a powerful strength to unify the movements and steps of education in UKDW. Through this idea, the graduates of UKDW are expected to be independent, creative, and innovative professionals that are appropriate with their field of study and committed to Christian teachings, as well as have a high social solidarity and a high environmental awareness. These are the characteristics that differentiate the graduates of UKDW to those of other universities.

Since its establishment in 1986, the Department of Informatics Engineering has received a pretty good response from public so that it was beyond expectations that as many as 116 students were accepted in that year. Furthermore, since 1987 the acceptance of students majoring in Informatics Engineering has shown growing numbers every year. In some periods, one batch is even able to accommodate approximately 250 students. Moreover, the graduates or its alumni can show good and satisfactory performance in the eyes of many companies, including Astra Recruitment Center which then routinely recruits the graduates majoring in Engineering Informatics of UKDW. The general public also appreciates these achievements and entrust their children to be educated in UKDW especially in the Informatics Engineering Department.

Because of the department’s magnitude in both quantity and quality as well as the demand for computer science development, then in 2005 UKDW opened a new study program namely Information System to accompany the Informatics Engineering. As time went by, it was necessary to conduct a more orderly, better, and easier organization management to address the suitability of science clusters that were being managed. Consequently, through the university senate meeting and decreed by the Foundation’s decision, as from 1 January 2011, UKDW set up a new Faculty namely FACULTY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY that respectively overshadows two study programs - INFORMATICS ENGINEERING and INFORMATION SYSTEM.
